GST Registration in short

The answer most people look for, in one paragraph.

GST registration is the online process of getting a GSTIN from the GST portal so your business can charge GST and claim input tax credit. It is compulsory once turnover crosses ₹40 lakh for goods or ₹20 lakh for services, and for some businesses from day one. The government charges no fee for it.

What is GST registration?

GST registration is how a business enrols with the GST system and gets a GSTIN, its 15-character tax number. Once registered, you can legally collect GST from buyers, pass on the credit of tax you pay on purchases and appear as a verified supplier on the GST portal.

The GST you charge depends on where the sale goes.

  • CGST and SGSTCharged together on a sale within your own state, half going to the Centre and half to the state
  • IGSTCharged on a sale to another state or an export, collected by the Centre
  • UTGSTUsed instead of SGST in union territories without a legislature, such as Chandigarh

Who needs GST registration?

Under Section 22 of the CGST Act, you must register once your aggregate turnover in a financial year crosses the limit for your state. Aggregate turnover means all your taxable, exempt and export sales across India under one PAN, before tax.

Some businesses must register even with zero turnover. Section 24 lists them, and the common cases are below.

  • Anyone selling goods to another state (inter-state supply of goods)
  • Sellers on Amazon, Flipkart and other e-commerce platforms, with limited relief for some small sellers
  • Casual taxable persons who set up a stall or exhibition in another state
  • Businesses that must pay tax under reverse charge
  • Non-resident taxable persons and input service distributors
  • E-commerce operators who collect tax at source (TCS)
GST registration turnover limits: ₹40 lakh for goods, ₹20 lakh for services, lower in special category states

Type of businessMost statesSpecial category states
Only goods₹40 lakh₹20 lakh
Services, or goods and services₹20 lakh₹10 lakh
Inter-state supply of goodsFrom day oneFrom day one

Some states kept the lower ₹20 lakh limit for goods. Our expert confirms the limit for your state before filing.

Who does not need to register under GST?

Not every business has to register. Section 23 of the CGST Act and a few notifications keep these cases out, as long as no other rule pulls them in.

  • Only exempt suppliesA business that sells only goods or services that are exempt or not taxable under GST (Section 23(1)(a))
  • FarmersAn agriculturist selling produce from cultivating land (Section 23(1)(b))
  • Reverse charge onlyA person whose entire supplies are taxed in the hands of the buyer (Notification 5/2017-Central Tax)
  • Small inter-state service providersServices to other states with turnover below the limit (Notification 10/2017-Integrated Tax)

Even if you are below the limit or exempt, a voluntary registration can help you win business buyers. Ask us before you decide.

Documents required for GST registration

Keep clear scans or phone photos ready. The list depends on how your business is set up.

Proof of business address can be an electricity bill, property tax receipt or municipal khata. If the place is rented, add the rent agreement and a no-objection letter from the owner.

How long does GST registration take?

After you submit FORM GST REG-01, the portal sends an ARN (acknowledgement) in FORM GST REG-02. How fast the GSTIN comes depends on Aadhaar authentication and the risk check the portal runs.

  1. 1Open gst.gov.in and go to Services, then Registration, then Track Application Status
  2. 2Choose ARN, type your ARN and the captcha, and click Search

Types of GST registration

Most businesses take a normal registration. Pick the right one at the start, because changing it later means more paperwork.

  • Normal taxpayerFor most traders, manufacturers and service providers
  • Composition scheme (Section 10)Pay tax at a low fixed rate if turnover is up to ₹1.5 crore (₹75 lakh in some special category states), or ₹50 lakh for service providers
  • Casual taxable person (Section 27)For a short stall or event in another state, valid up to 90 days
  • Non-resident taxable personFor a foreign business supplying in India occasionally
  • Input Service Distributor, TDS and TCS registrationsFor specific cases under the law
  • Voluntary registration (Section 25(3))Below the limit, to work with big buyers and claim input tax credit

What is a GSTIN and how to read it?

Your GSTIN is a 15-character number. You will print it on every invoice, so it helps to know what each part means.

Example only. Every GSTIN is unique and is linked to one PAN and one state.

One GSTIN for each state: registering across India

Registration under GST is state-wise. If you have a place of business in two states, you need two GSTINs under the same PAN (Section 25). The first two digits of every GSTIN are the state code.

You do not need a consultant next door. The whole process is online, so our experts file for businesses in every state and union territory.

The full list of state and UT codes is on the GST portal.

Why GST applications get rejected, and how to avoid it

Most rejections and queries come from small slips. Our expert checks for these before filing.

  • Name on PAN and the application do not match exactly
  • Address proof is old, unclear or in another person's name without a no-objection letter
  • Wrong business activity or HSN / SAC code selected
  • Aadhaar authentication not completed within the time given
  • Mobile or email given in REG-01 that the owner cannot access later
  • Composition scheme chosen when the business sells to other states

Changing or cancelling your registration later

Business details change. GST law has a separate process for each kind of change, and the time limits are short.

  • Change of mobile number or emailThrough the portal after OTP checks
  • Closing the business or turnover below the limitCancellation in FORM GST REG-16 (Section 29, Rule 20)
  • Registration cancelled by the officerApply for revocation in FORM GST REG-21 within the time allowed (Section 30)

Penalty for not registering under GST

If you were liable to register and did not, Section 122 of the CGST Act applies. The penalty is ₹10,000 or 10% of the tax due, whichever is higher. Where tax was evaded on purpose, the penalty can go up to 100% of the tax due, along with interest on the unpaid tax.

Registering on time is far cheaper. If you have already crossed the limit, talk to us before you file so the dates and tax are worked out correctly.

What is the GST registration limit in India?

For a business that sells only goods, the limit is ₹40 lakh of aggregate turnover in a year in most states. For services, or goods and services together, it is ₹20 lakh. In special category states the limits are ₹20 lakh and ₹10 lakh. Some states kept ₹20 lakh for goods, so check your state first.

Is there any government fee for GST registration?

No. The GST portal does not charge any fee for a new registration. If someone tells you there is a government charge, ask for the official source. You only pay the professional fee of the person filing for you, and at CorpTick that fee is shown to you in writing before you pay anything at all.

How many days does it take to get a GSTIN?

From 1 November 2025, low-risk applicants who complete Aadhaar authentication can get registration within three working days under Rule 9A. Otherwise the officer has seven working days under Rule 9. If the officer orders a physical check of your business place, it can take up to thirty days. Complete documents keep the process quick.

Can I get GST registration without a shop or office?

Yes. Many freelancers and online sellers register using their home address as the principal place of business. You need proof of that address, such as an electricity bill, and a no-objection letter if the property is in someone else's name. If you rent, add the rent agreement. The officer may still verify the place.

Can I apply for GST registration if my turnover is below the limit?

Yes. Section 25(3) allows voluntary registration. It helps when your buyers want GST invoices, when you want to claim input tax credit or when you plan to sell online or across states. Remember that once registered, you must file returns on time even in months with no sales, or late fees will apply.

What is the new simplified GST registration scheme?

Rule 14A, in force from 1 November 2025, is an optional scheme for applicants whose output tax on supplies to registered businesses is up to ₹2.5 lakh a month. After Aadhaar authentication, registration is granted electronically within three working days. You can later withdraw from it through FORM GST REG-32 when your business grows beyond that limit.

Do I need a separate GST registration for each state?

Yes. Registration is state-wise, so if you have a place of business in more than one state, you need a separate GSTIN in each of them under the same PAN. Within one state, you can add extra branches or warehouses as additional places of business on the same registration instead of taking a new one.

Is Aadhaar authentication compulsory for GST registration?

Under Rule 8(4A), applicants go through Aadhaar authentication, usually by an OTP sent to the mobile linked with Aadhaar. In some cases the portal asks for biometric verification at a GST Suvidha Kendra. Skipping authentication leads to a physical check of the place, which makes registration slower, so we help you complete it on time.

How do I get a GST number?

Apply on the GST portal at gst.gov.in under Services, Registration, New Registration. Fill Part A with PAN, mobile and email to get a TRN, then Part B with business, address and bank details, complete Aadhaar authentication and submit. You receive an ARN at once and the GSTIN after approval, usually within three to seven working days.

How much does a CA charge for GST registration?

The government charges nothing, so the only cost is the professional fee. CAs and online platforms usually charge somewhere between a few hundred and two thousand rupees, depending on the business type and the work involved. At CorpTick the fee starts at ₹999 plus GST, and the exact amount is given in writing before you pay.

Can I sell on Amazon or Flipkart without GST registration?

Most e-commerce sellers need GST registration from the start under Section 24. The government has given limited relief to some small sellers of goods within one state and to small service providers, subject to conditions. Marketplaces also ask for a GSTIN before listing in many categories, so check with our expert before you begin selling online.

How do I check my GST registration status?

Go to the GST portal, open Services, then Registration, and choose Track Application Status. Enter the ARN you received after filing, or your TRN for a saved application. The status shows whether it is pending, under query or approved. When you register through CorpTick, we track it for you and send updates on WhatsApp.
